The Devon Hospitals Short Stay School provides education for children in hospital in Devon.

We teach on two sites –

  • Bramble Unit at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exeter
  • Caroline Thorpe Ward at the North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple

Our mission statement is:

  • Devon Hospitals Short Stay School aims to ensure that young people have their right to education preserved whilst they are unable to attend their home school for medical reasons.  DHSSS is committed to providing a personalised education that meets social, emotional and physical aspects of the young person’s needs within a safe, positive and nurturing educational environment.  It aims to:

    • keep the young person in contact with the familiar world of school,
    • provide an enriching and stimulating curriculum
    • promote social integration wherever possible
    • help pupils to keep up with schoolwork and make the best possible progress
    • support pupils in their return to their home school.


     Safeguarding is a high priority at our school. As employers we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and, in that regard, have appropriate policies and procedures. in place.

Devon Hospitals Short Stay School News

  • Peru week
    Last week, we had a Peruvian theme on both sites. The children learned about geography, traditional stories, musical instruments, made travel brochures and even tasted some fruit from Peru!
  • Ofsted!
    Ofsted inspectors visited on 24th April for the day with our overall judgement being rated as GOOD! We are very pleased. Here are some 'snippets' from the report but, to read the whole document, go to our  About Us section.
  • A great bring thank you
    We would like to thank Otter Nurseries for their generous contribution of £200 to buy plants for the garden area for the school based at the RDE Hospital.
  • World Cup Fever
    Now that most of the exams are over we have taken the opportunity to learn a little more about the countries competing in the Football World Cup. With two wins under their belt England are off to a great start.
  • Let's get physical
    Following on from our visit by the lovely Helen from Oxford Hospital School, we have been encouraging our students to take part in more Physical Education. Click Let's get physical above to read the full story.
